My parents live in the hills just outside of Bath, and a hilltop across from their property was one of the sites of some of the first experimental drilling a few years ago. Steuben County is the most impoverished county in the entire state of New York, as there are very few major industries to support the local population. I think most of the residents are hoping the industry will bring jobs to the area, but I don’t think that they realize that the companies doing the drilling will likely be hiring very few local residents. Bath, Painted Post, and the rest of the area are only going to lose from this deal- especially since so many people draw water from their own wells.

Another tack: Questions we might ask: How much water does each truck hold, and how many truck loads are required for each frack? How many families needs could be met by that same amount of water? How much farmland could be watered with that same amount of water? At a time when a great swath of our country has been declared a drought emergency, what is the moral justification for fracking???
